Habemus Papam! Welcome, Pope Leo XIV!

The bells of Saint Peter’s rang out, the white smoke rose—and the world heard those ancient words echo once again from the balcony of Saint Peter’s Basilica:
“Habemus Papam!” — “We have a Pope!”

With great joy, the Church welcomes Pope Leo XIV, the first American ever elected to the papacy. His words reflect humility and wisdom rooted in one of the Church’s great saints.
For many, it’s a hopeful sign shaped by Augustine’s teachings on grace, truth, and the restless heart.

Who Is Pope Leo XIV?

Pope Leo XIV is a seasoned shepherd of the Church with deep theological roots and pastoral experience. While his name may be new to many, his commitment to truth, prayer, and unity has been evident throughout his ministry.

His reference to Saint Augustine in his first address already gives us a glimpse into the spiritual lens through which he views his mission—a desire for all hearts to find their rest in God.

What Does “Habemus Papam” Mean?

Habemus Papam” is Latin for “We have a Pope.” It is the traditional announcement made from the balcony of Saint Peter’s Basilica after a successful papal conclave. The full formula declares the name of the cardinal elected, who then steps out to offer his first blessing as the new Holy Father.

What Role Does the Pope Play in the Catholic Church?

The pope is the Bishop of Rome, the Successor of Saint Peter, and the visible head of the Catholic Church on Earth. He is called by Christ to “strengthen your brethren” (Luke 22:32), guiding the universal Church in unity, truth, and love. As Catholics, we see the pope as a spiritual father and shepherd, called to serve—not to be served.

Why Should We Pray for the Pope?

Scripture urges us to pray for all who are in authority (1 Timothy 2:1–2), and this includes our spiritual leaders. Saint Paul tells us, “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17). The pope bears enormous spiritual responsibility and needs our constant support in prayer. It is one of the most powerful gifts we can offer him.

Let us pray that Pope Leo XIV will be a courageous, holy, and wise leader, attentive to the Holy Spirit and close to the heart of Christ.

What Does A New Pope Mean for the Church?

In this Jubilee Year of Hope, Pope Leo XIV’s election feels providential. It invites all of us to renew our faith in Christ’s promise: “I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). The Church is alive. The Spirit is moving. With Pope Leo XIV, we begin a new chapter—one rooted in the eternal truths of the Gospel.

A Call to Prayer and Unity

Let us unite as the Body of Christ, offering our prayers and sacrifices for our new Holy Father. Let us walk forward in joy, hope, and obedience to the Church. And let us entrust Pope Leo XIV to the loving care of Our Lady, Mother of the Church, that she may guide him always toward her Son.

A Prayer for Pope Leo XIV

Heavenly Father,
We thank You for the gift of our new Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV.
Fill him with wisdom, courage, and a deep love for Your Church.
May he be a faithful shepherd, leading us ever closer to Jesus.
Strengthen him in times of trial, console him in sorrow,
and let Your grace flow through his words and actions.
Through the intercession of Mary, Mother of the Church,
keep him faithful to Your will and firm in his mission.
Amen.

Viva il Papa! Long live the Pope!

Let’s journey forward together—with faithful hearts and joyful hope. Christ is with His Church. The Holy Spirit is guiding us. And under the leadership of Pope Leo XIV, we move forward in faith, hope, and love.
