Each year, on the Fourth Sunday of Easter—Good Shepherd Sunday—the Church invites us to observe the World Day of Prayer for Vocations. This year, on Sunday, May 11, the faithful around the globe unite in a special way to pray for vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, and consecrated life.
This day is not only about future vocations—it’s also an opportunity to thank God for the priests and religious who have already said “yes” to their calling and have walked with us through the joys and trials of life.
The Church Needs Holy Vocations
We live in a time when the Church is in great need of faithful, courageous, and compassionate shepherds. Priests and religious brothers and sisters are vital to the life of the Church—offering the sacraments, guiding us in faith, and witnessing to the love of Christ. On this day, we’re reminded that vocations are not just for a few—they are the fruit of a praying and listening Church.
As Pope Francis once said:
“Every vocation is born of that gaze of love with which the Lord came to meet us.”
A Personal Invitation to Pray
Each of us has been touched in some way by the life and ministry of a priest. Maybe it was the priest who baptized you, heard your first confession, offered Mass at your wedding, or stood beside your family at a loved one’s funeral. Their presence may have quietly supported you in a time of crisis—or guided you back when you felt far from God.
On this World Day of Prayer for Vocations, take time to pray for those priests who have ministered to you—those still living and those who have gone home to the Lord.
Let their names come to mind and lift them in prayer:
- For the priest who gave you Jesus in the Eucharist
- For the priest who offered you mercy in Confession
- For the priest who answered God’s call, not knowing you would one day need him
Reflection: We All Have a Vocation
This day is also a powerful reminder that every single person is called by God. Whether to the priesthood, religious life, marriage, or the single life, each vocation is a unique path of love and service. Discerning our vocation takes time, prayer, and a willingness to listen.
Ask yourself: How is God calling me to love in this season of my life?
And just as we pray for priests, let us also pray for young people—especially those in our parishes and families—who may be hearing the whisper of God’s call.
A Prayer for Vocations
Heavenly Father,
You call each of us by name and invite us to follow You.
On this World Day of Prayer for Vocations, we lift up to You all the priests, deacons, and religious who have faithfully served Your Church.
Bless and protect them in their vocations.
Call forth new shepherds from among us—courageous men and women who will give their lives in loving service.
Give them ears to hear, hearts to respond, and the grace to persevere.
And help us all to live our own vocations with humility, joy, and trust in Your perfect plan.
Amen.
Let Us Remember: The Church flourishes when her people pray.
This May 11th, let’s join together with the universal Church to pray for vocations. Light a candle. Offer a Rosary. Attend Mass with this special intention. And above all—thank God for the priests and religious who have helped shape your journey of faith.
Jesus, Good Shepherd, guide us.
Mary, Mother of Vocations, pray for us.
