Approaching the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the Mass

The Sacred Heart of Jesus is a powerful symbol of His divine love. A love that burns with mercy, compassion, and an invitation to draw closer. Nowhere is this love more present than in the Holy Mass, where Christ’s sacrifice becomes real in the Eucharist.

While meditating during Mass and pondering the Sacred Heart of Jesus, I felt the intensity of His love, on fire and present in the Eucharist. Like a flame, it consumes, purifies, and draws us deeper into His mercy.

As we participate in the liturgy, we are given the opportunity to approach His Heart, uniting our own hearts with His in an intimate encounter. Understanding how to enter more deeply into this mystery can transform the way we experience the Mass and receive His boundless love.

The Sacred Heart and the Incense in the Thurible

The burning coal in the thurible symbolizes the Sacred Heart of Jesus, on fire with love, radiating divine mercy. Just as incense rises to heaven, our prayers and devotion should rise to Christ, who purifies and sanctifies us.

How to Draw Closer to the Sacred Heart in Mass

1. Prepare with Reverence – Approach Mass with an open heart, ready to receive grace. Offer your intentions and surrender your burdens to Jesus.
2. Unite with the Offering of the Eucharist – The altar reveals Christ’s Heart in its fullness. In the Eucharist, His love is poured out for us. Receive Him with faith and devotion.
3. Meditate on the Incense – When you see the thurible, remember that Christ’s Heart burns for love of you. Offer your prayers like incense, trusting in His mercy.
4. Receive Christ Worthily – Before receiving Holy Communion, ask Jesus to purify your heart so that it may burn with the same love as His Sacred Heart.
5. Live in the Fire of His Love – The Sacred Heart is not just a devotion but a way of life. Carry His love beyond the Mass by practicing charity, mercy, and trust in His divine will.

The Sacred Heart invites us to draw near, be transformed, and set our hearts on fire with divine love. When we approach the altar, we approach Jesus’ Heart calling us deeper into union with Him. Let us respond with trust, devotion, and a heart open to His grace.
