The Immaculate Heart of Mary mirrors the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Jesus’s Sacred Heart is Jesus himself, which is why we celebrate a feast for the Sacred Heart. Mary’s Immaculate Heart is Mary herself, which is why we celebrate this memorial.
The best way to practice devotion to the Immaculate Heart involves making ourselves immaculate. This transformation occurs through the sacraments. God transforms us from spiritual poverty into His beautiful children through Baptism, Confession, and Holy Communion.
The Vision That Changed Everything
The devotion to the Immaculate Heart received its most detailed explanation not at Fatima in 1917, but through two crucial apparitions to Sister Lucia years later.
On December 10, 1925, the Blessed Virgin appeared to Sister Lucia in her convent cell in Pontevedra, Spain. Jesus appeared with His Mother as a child standing on a cloud. Mary showed her heart covered with thorns and surrounded by roses – the rosary, which means “crown of roses.”
Jesus spoke these words: “Have compassion on the heart of your most holy Mother, with which ungrateful men pierce at every moment, and there is no one to make an act of reparation to remove the wounds of her heart.”
Mary then revealed her promise: “See my daughter, my heart encircled by thorns with which ungrateful men pierce it at every moment by their blasphemies and ingratitude. Do you at least strive to console me. Tell them that I promise to assist at the hour of death with the graces necessary for salvation all those who, in order to make reparation to me, on the first Saturday of five consecutive months go to confession, receive Holy Communion, say five decades of the rosary, and keep me company for a quarter of an hour meditating on the mysteries of the rosary.”
This is otherwise known as the First Saturday’s devotion.
Heaven’s Plan for Salvation
Sister Lucia emphasized that devotion to the Immaculate Heart was essential, not optional. Our Lady of Fatima provides the answer to reverse the deterioration of peace and morals in our world. This begins with two requirements: the daily rosary and devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
Mary promised: “Jesus wishes to make use of you to make me known and loved. He wants to establish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart. I promise salvation to those who will embrace it.”
Few devotions promise salvation. This one does. Mary explained that souls embracing this devotion “will be loved by God like flowers placed by me to adorn his throne.”
The Mystery of the United Hearts
Why does Jesus want His Mother’s Immaculate Heart venerated alongside His Sacred Heart? Sister Lucia provided the answer: “It was in this heart that the Father placed his Son as if in the first tabernacle.”
The blood of Christ was the blood of Mary. For nine months in her womb, they shared the same blood. The blood came from her Immaculate Heart. The heart of Christ beat in unison with the heart of Mary.
The Eucharistic Connection
Sister Lucia revealed the permanent connection between the Immaculate Heart and the Eucharist. From their mother’s heart, children receive their natural life and life-giving blood. Jesus received His humanity and nature from Mary’s heart and life-giving blood.
Sister Lucia explained: “It is the body received from Mary that in Christ becomes a victim offered for the salvation of mankind. It is the blood received from Mary that circulates in Christ’s veins and which pours out from his divine heart. It is the same body and blood received from Mary that are given to us under the appearance of bread and wine as our daily food.”
Saturday: Mary’s Day
The Memorial of the Immaculate Heart always falls on Saturday following the Sacred Heart feast on Friday. This timing holds deep significance.
Saturday represents the day when creation was completed. God rested on the seventh day. In parallel, Jesus rested in the womb of Mary and in her loving arms from birth to death. God rested on Saturday after creation. His Son rested in Mary throughout His earthly life.
Saturday serves as Mary’s day because God rested in Mary. Hence we honor her on Saturday as preparation for Sunday, the Lord’s Day of Resurrection.
The Path to Triumph
The triumph of the Immaculate Heart requires both the consecration of Russia and the faithful practice of First Saturday devotions. Many believe Russia has been consecrated by the Holy Father, but the First Saturdays remain incomplete.
The First Saturday devotion requires five consecutive months of:
- Going to confession
- Receiving Holy Communion
- Praying five decades of the rosary
- Meditating for 15 minutes on the mysteries
After completing five First Saturdays, continue the practice. Like athletic conditioning, spiritual conditioning requires ongoing effort.
Five Types of Blasphemies
Jesus explained to Sister Lucia why five First Saturdays were required. Five types of blasphemies wound Mary’s Immaculate Heart:
- Blasphemies against her Immaculate Conception
- Blasphemies against her perpetual virginity
- Blasphemies against her divine maternity
- Blasphemies of those who instill hatred of Mary in children
- Blasphemies of those who revile her sacred images
Mary requested this devotion not from pride, but to secure forgiveness for those who blaspheme against her. Through our reparations, God’s mercy pardons souls who offend her.
The Immaculate Conception Connection
The Immaculate Heart is immaculate because of the Immaculate Conception. God’s greatest act of mercy ever bestowed upon a human creature was preserving Mary from original sin from the first moment of her existence.
Scripture supports this truth. When the angel Gabriel said “Hail, full of grace,” the Greek word “kecharitomene” means “one most transformed by grace.” This greeting indicates Mary possessed permanent and unique grace from the beginning.
Genesis 3:15 provides additional proof. God declared complete enmity between Satan and the woman who would bear the one to crush Satan’s head. If Mary had any stain of sin, she would be partially under Satan’s influence, making God’s promise false.
Transformation Through the Sacraments
The triumph of the Immaculate Heart begins in individual hearts. Your heart becomes immaculate through the sacraments. This represents the only guaranteed form of grace that transforms us from spiritual poverty into God’s beautiful children.
The sacraments accomplish this transformation. Baptism cleanses us. Confession restores us. Holy Communion nourishes us with Christ’s Body and Blood – the same Body and Blood He received from Mary’s Immaculate Heart.
Living the Devotion Today
Devotion to the Immaculate Heart means imitating Mary’s purity and obedience. When Gabriel announced God’s plan, Mary responded with her fiat: “Let it be done unto me according to your word.”
This devotion requires daily cooperation with God’s grace through:
- Daily rosary prayer
- Regular reception of the sacraments
- Monthly First Saturday observances
- Meditation on Mary’s virtues
- Consecration to her Immaculate Heart
The Promise of Triumph
Mary promised at Fatima: “In the end, my Immaculate Heart will triumph.” This triumph occurs when hearts worldwide honor the Immaculate Heart alongside the Sacred Heart.
The triumph will end the errors of Russia – atheistic communism, materialism, and attacks on family life. True peace requires a rightly ordered society born of a culture of life created through evangelization.
